  28. It is quite discouraging to find that computers are sold containing
  29. modems that are (a) not really modems at all, and (b) come with no manual.
  30. And (c) are often not even identifiable by make and model.  The modem and
  31. computer company get your money, and the support is pushed to other people
  32. (like us) who have no idea what the modem is, and therefore how to fix the
  33. problem, if indeed it can be fixed -- bear in mind that most modern internal
  34. modems, and especially winmodems -- are designed with cheapness as the top
  35. priority; correct operation is probably very low on the priority list.  Once
  36. the money has changed hands, the modem has served its purpose.

  38. Of course we will still try to help.  My first advice is to read Chapter 5
  39. of "Using C-Kermit", 2nd Edition, which explains all about dialing prefixes
  40. and so on.  Pay special attention to the section on PBXs on pages 107-108.

  42. Make sure you have given all the relevant SET DIAL commands to K95 so it
  43. knows how to dial the number.  In particular, try:
  44.  
  45.   SET DIAL PBX OUTSIDE-PREFIX 80W
  46.  
  47. (not "80,,") and see if that helps.  Of course, correct operation of "W"
  48. depends on your modem (whatever it is) and your PBX, and your modem's ability
  49. to recognize the PBX's dialtone.  If you still have no luck, please follow up
  50. by sending email to kermit-support@columbia.edu.
